Pikkuw - The Refit has Commenced

Clients and friends will know that our mother ship, the PIKKUW, has been brought down to Cairns to undergo a major refit this year.

She made the journey down from Weipa on-board a Sea Swift barge...thankfully they were able to pick her up from the water using their on-board crane, a huge savings in costs etc. A similar event happened once safely in Trinity Inlet (Cairns harbour) and she is now tucked away inside the Big Boat Shed at Portsmith.

She looks a little sad I must say....ingloriously propped up on stilts awaiting the marine surveyors, engineers, electricians and boat builders to giver her a thorough going over.

Capt. Rob is almost living on the vessel at present - ripping out flooring / ceilings / wiring and bulk heads etc. to enable the powers that be to gain easy and clear access to assess her thoroughly.

This IS a MAJOR exercise.....but in the end we will have a beautiful vessel ready to give our clients more years of valuable and safe service as a "home away from home" up in remote Cape York. We envisage this work to take several weeks of intensive renovation and plan to have he back on the water by mid to late March.

We are also looking at a slight amendment to the Pikkuw's survey registration. This may allow us to travel locally up at Aurukun and have a more functioning mother ship to provide easy access up and down the coast.....the Love & Kirk Rivers to name a few!

We are also looking at broadening out charter options to cater to the inshore "blue water" fisherman. This fishery is almost untouched up there with the likes of tuna / mackerel / queenies / sailfish and marlin a possibility as well as the fabulous reef fishing for reds etc. More on this later.

But, should readers be interested in this exciting new option, please contact our booking agent, Pam Marsh, on sales@aurukunfishingcharters.com or Ph 0448563586 and we will put an itinerary together for you. (Note - this charter is not affected by the closed barra season). This charter can also take advantage of the fabulous conditions generally available in the Gulf from March onwards and will extend our season.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!

Kind regards, Les
